Smoke-free Tobacco Product Types

Snus (Moist Snuff)
Snus (rhymes with "goose") is a moist, powdered, pasteurized tobacco product that originated in Sweden. Snus can be packaged loose or in regular or mini portions, which are a tea bag-like pouch. The pouch is tucked between the lip and gums. Over 30 years of research has shown that snus use does not have any significant health risks.

Dry (Nasal) Snuff
Dry snuff is a dry form of snus that is inhaled. Snuffs vary from moist to dry, and from coarse to fine and may be  natural, or perfumed or "medicated." There is no firm evidence that use of nasal snuff increases the user's risk of any diseases.

Western Loose Tobacco (Dip/Chewing Tobacco)
Loose tobacco, such as that which is typically sold in Western countries like the United States, is a moist tobacco similar to snus. Traditionally, "dip" or "chewing tobacco" comes in loose form, but it is also available in pouches. The "grind" is a bit more coarse than moist snuff and it is a "spit type" product that is placed under the lower lip or in the cheek. Due to improved processing over the past few decades, it is now considered to have the same low health effects as snus.

Strips
Tobacco strips are made of finely ground tobacco and are similar to the breath freshening strips that dissolve in the mouth. They last about 2-3 minutes. This type of tobacco is currently made only by RJ Reynolds under the Camel brand. It is widely believed by tobacco harm reduction experts that the health risks of this product would be the same as or very similar to snus.

Lozenges/Orbs
Tobacco lozenges are very similar to the nicotine lozenges made by the pharmaceutical industry, except they contain finely ground tobacco. Many smokers find the tobacco lozenges to be more satisfying because pharmaceutical lozenges are required to have a much lower nicotine content and do not contain any other tobacco alkaloids. There are currently three brands of tobacco lozenges: Ariva, Stonewall and Camel Orbs.  It is widely believed by tobacco harm reduction experts that the health risks of this product would be the same as or very similar to snus.

Sticks
Tobacco sticks are made of finely ground tobacco and are similar in size to a toothpick. They dissolve in the mouth in about 20 - 30 minutes. This type of tobacco is currently made only by RJ Reynolds under the Camel brand. It is widely believed by tobacco harm reduction experts that the health risks of this product would be the same as or very similar to snus.
